AUGUST 13, PORTLAND, OR – ABLAZE announced today that INDIE GAMES, a hardcover coffee table art book about the history, art, sound and design of independent video games, written by Bounthavy Suvilay, and edited by Sarah Rodriguez, is now available.

Video games have grown exponentially in recent years and have captured the hearts of millions. The global video game industry grew to over $120 billion in 2019, and recently video games have been in the news setting record sales numbers during the last several months, as more people are at home. The overall industry—including mobile, console, and PC games— is expected to hit over $200 billion in the next few years.

To compete with the blockbuster games, independent developers have had to be massively creative and come up with innovative gameplay, top-notch writing, original graphic universes, and sumptuous soundtracks. INDIE GAMES pays homage to some of the greatest success stories in the world of independent games.

Superbly illustrated, the book contains more than three hundred images from titles that revolutionized the gaming industry. Full of anecdotes and interviews with personalities like industry veteran Eric Chahi and young designers like Ian Dallas. You will see behind the scenes at Indie studios, revealing the creators, designs and marketing. This exploration will give you a better understanding on what is an “Indie” game.

Writer Bounthavy Suvilay: “This is a love letter to human ingenuity and passion that urge creators to overcome obstacles. They think outside the frame to produce the games they dream of playing.”

INDIE GAMES takes the reader behind the scenes at the independent studios who participated in the making of this volume. These include: Team Cherry ( Hollow Knight), Amanita Design (Samorost, Botanicula); Double Fine Production (Broken Age, Day of the Tentacle); Stoic Studio (The Banner Saga); Giant Sparrow (What Remains of Edith Finch, The Unfinished Swan); Playdead ( Limbo, Inside); Subset Games (Faster Than Light); Shirow Games (Northgard); MotionTwin (Dead Cells).

“Over the last few years, indie games have become some of my favorite games to play because they bring an originality and fearlessness back into the industry,” said Editor Sarah Rodriguez.

Official and authorized, with the participation of studios around the world, including over 50 interviews highlighting over 70 games, INDIE GAMES is the most complete and up-to-date overview of indie video gaming. With exclusive behind the scenes content provided by the studios, it serves as a fitting tribute to the audacity of these developers, who have elevated video games into an art.
